So during my '97 summer trip to New York, my friends and I decided to make a little trek across the city scouting a few sites from one of our favorite films: Ghostbusters.
The journey began, as does the film, with the New York Public Library. (I know, I know, the establishing shot is from the other side. Let it go.) Unfortunately, the building was closed for renovations at the time, so we couldn't go inside. Instead, we simply had to admire the lions guarding the steps.
Interesting thing about the lions, though, is that they were generally hated when they were first unveiled back in 1911. One critic commented that the model used in sculpting them must have been stuffed. In fact, they were almost not lions at all. During the planning stages, Theodore Roosevelt suggested that they be elk or moose. One group actually lobbied for beavers.
