Fort Knox
Off Highway 31W · Fort Knox, KY
Most people would call it Fort Knox. More accurately, however, what you see here is the U.S. Gold Bullion Depository. Fort Knox is the military post where this building is located.
The post was established in 1918 as a training camp and became a permanent military installation 14 years later. The Depository was built in 1936 and houses the nation's supply of gold bullion. However, some people tell me they don't keep it there anymore. I couldn't tell you. I didn't get a chance to peek inside.
It's a bit creepy just staring at the building when you're actually there. There's no movement but the flag waving in the wind. You really wonder what's going on inside, what all that gold looks like, and just how far you could get over the fence before they gun you down. Then you snap out of it and just wonder how much longer you can stand there before they give you a parking ticket.
And if you like all things military, there's the Patton Museum, located on the post. Lots of tanks outside to climb around on, too. Can't get inside 'em, though. Believe me, I tried. Welded shut. Like I'm gonna drive off with one. Sheesh.
